Anti Trafficking Projects - Oasis India
 
 
At St Paul’s we have been supporting prevention of trafficking projects in India since January 2016. From 2021, our support is through Oasis India, in Mumbai.  Members of the church family visited Oasis in 2020 and were very impressed at their work.


Thousands of vulnerable people in India are caught in the grip of traffickers, forced into dehumanising work by their poverty. Traffickers prey on poor communities, using the allure of money to drag people into this evil network of slavery and abuse. People are offered jobs working in hotels or cafes, but when they arrive, their new workplace is a brothel, passports are taken off them and they are beaten into work and paid nothing.

Oasis India aims to prevent human trafficking and violence against women and children and to assist each person to flourish in their community. Interventions are aligned along six core components: Education, Skill Development, Prevention, Rehabilitation, Sports and Community building. Prevention of human trafficking remains the heart of all they do.  
 
Counselling, health care, life skills and spiritual input play an important role in helping the women make the right choices, plus mentors suggest methods to bring about transformations. This in turn helps to change the community in order to bring about safety for women and children.
 
Oasis' projects include a night shelter for children in the Red Light Area, and a residential rehabilitation facility for women who have left the RLA to find healing, training and to develop skills for independent living. There is also a group home facility for young men and women where they can learn to manage their time and money and live in a normal community. This is made possible with the support of local churches.
